Obituary for Olive J. Hines

Olive J.  Hines
Colonel Olive J. Hines, 84, of Belleville, IL, born in Alma, IL on June 22nd, 1932 passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at St. Louis University Hospital.

Colonel Hines was a highly decorated officer who served 43 years in the United States Air Force, 18 of which as a pilot. He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross and The Silver Star for extraordinary achievement and gallantry while piloting unarmed reconnaissance aircraft over North Vietnam. In the words of one of his commanding officers, he was “a true warrior who never turned down a mission.” The remaining 25 years of service comprised five different posts within NATO, plus various academic assignments including department chair, professor, and ROTC instructor at Purdue and the University of Maryland. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Olive was a most loving, generous, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Proceeding him in death are his parents, Carl L. and Mary E. Hines (nee Britt), sister; Elizabeth Lucille Johnston.

Olive is survived and dearly missed by his wife, Annemarie I. Hines (nee Hammerstingl); daughters, Christa L. Hines, Maria E. Hines, son, John V. Hines, grandchildren, Sarah I. Stromsdorfer, Oliver M. Codd, Jaimie M. Hartmann; sisters Patricia Ann Miller, Louise Annette Humble and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Flowers or Masses may be sent to St. Teresa Catholic Church. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.schildknechtfh.com.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am – 10:50 am Thursday February 16, 2017 at St. Teresa Catholic Church 1201 Lebanon Avenue Belleville, IL 62221.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am from the church with Fr. James Thomas officiating.

Burial will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday February 16, 2017 at Alma Cemetery in Alma, Il with full Military Honors.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Schildknecht Funeral Home.
